What's in a name?

Special post today on "The Daily Button:" Cecile McPeak (the woman who started it all) talks about the beginnings of JABC and how she met Joan Hawley of Lazy Girl. This post is a companion post to today's Lazy Girl blog post, guest authored by Cecile.

 What's in a Name?

Hello.  Have we met?  Let me introduce myself, Cecile McPeak, founder and creative director of Just Another Button Company™.  A number of years ago at wholesale quilt market, I met Joan Hawley.  I remember most her friendly smile and contagious laugh.  Joan's booth displayed her Lazy Girl pattern line and she offered a pattern to play with button embellishment.  While there have been occasional collaborations between Lazy Girl purse and JABC button, Joan has also become a friend and mentor.  I consider being asked to be a guest blogger for her blog to be quite an honor.

At Just Another Button Company we like to say we are Fifteen and Fabulous to answer the phone--celebrating our fifteenth year in business.  There is usually a pause at the other end of the line, just for a moment, then a chuckle, and quite often a remark like, "Yes, you certainly are."

In 1996, when we produced our first button embellishments, we were known as Just My Imagination.  Within a year, we knew we had a good product needing a more memorable name.  It was the peak time of button embellishment on wearable art.  Every trade show had a multitude of button companies showing really handsome, often handmade, buttons.  I should know.  I bought lots of them for my personal stash.

There was a niche for our polymer clay buttons though. They were machine washable, thin and very lightweight, ideal for both wearables and decorative quilts, and for framed stitcheries.  Yet there was a challenge; we heard again and again from wholesale buyers, "I can't buy from another button company."

The name was born.  We became Just Another Button Company™.  Business experts call it Crowdsource Branding--we called it making lemonade from lemons.  Whatever it's called, it worked.  Buyers took one look at the name, grinned, and asked to see the buttons.

A couple of years ago, we met a tough economic event with a new vision for buttons.  What if we turned a button on its edge and drilled a hole there, rather than the two holes we normally placed on the flat surface?  Drilled on the edge, then glued to a stainless steel sewing pin, the Just Pin was born.

Now we are exploring drilling all the way through to create beads.

Fifteen years is long enough for a business to become established, and a very good time to make sure it is still fresh.  To celebrate our fifteenth year, we are releasing 15 original pincushions as kits in 2011.  Each kit is complete with JABC buttons, Just Pins, Weeks Dye Works wool and roving--everything but the needle and thread.  The kits are easy to sell for any of our shops, no matter which needleart the shop features.  We call them the 15 and Fabulous Celebration of Pincushions.

As our business has grown, I've watched Joan create her website, blog, Facebook page, and Yahoo group.  I've sewn her Lazy Girl purses and watched her demonstrate zippers and rulers.  She is fearless--TV even!  I was inspired to explore all (well, most) of these marketing opportunities.  With my sister, Heidi Carver,  JABC Business Manager, and my daughter, Rachel Martin, JABC Buttoneer and blogger, plus all the other JABC Buttoneers, we are pleased invite you to see more of our buttons, Just Pins, and pincushions on our website, and follow our button adventures on Facebook and our blog.

Many, many buttons and fifteen years later we still regularly get comments from satisfied customers who say, "You are NOT just another button company."  We just say, "Thanks."

And now, an extra-special giveaway:  one lucky reader will win the pincushion kit of her choice from our "15 and Fabulous Celebration of Pincushions" series!

  1. The only Lazy Girl pattern I've used so far is the Sassy Bag, so I guess it's my favorite! I have made 3 of them for my mother and she loves them because they keep her wallet safe and secure.

  2. I love the Chelsea tote! I made it a few years ago and take it with me whenever I travel because it is so versatile.

  3. I have used the Suzi Purse insert pattern over and over again. It is just the perfect size for bags to organize your stash. I have made them for friends and family and I still love the pattern.

I am in love with your pincushion patterns! They are so unique and charming.

  6. The Claire Handbag is my favorite Lazy Girl design. It's so stylish and versatile!

  7. I love the Maggie. It is quick and easy to make and oh so useful. I made the smaller version in lots of fabric combinations and antique buttons. I gave them out to my coworkers so that our magnetic door keys- the ones with our ugly pictures on them - still work but the ugly pictures don't have to be on public display.

  8. My very fav pattern is the "Claire bag". I made it a while ago, and it is definately a great handbag. The acrylic insert makes it very sturdy. I really love all the LG patterns, however.
The new pincushion patterns are very sweet too.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  9. I've used many of the Lazies, but I LOVE Miranda and Mini Miranda. I go back to them time and again. They are fun from picking the fabric to finishing and frequently have one with me. I get more favorable comments and questions about Mirandas than any other bag (Lazy or otherwise) that I make.

  13. I love the 'Maggie' and have made a number of them as the larger one holds my cell phone along with small one which holds my ID, cards, etc., which I can just put in a pocket for safety. I made another small one to hold my business cards. And I love putting buttons on them. Love your buttons and the pin cushions.

Love your buttons. I always put a button on the flap of the Wonder Wallet, so now I know where to find the best buttons ever.

  32. I must have made a least a few multiples of each of Joan's Lazy Girls. Depending on my mood or occasion one of these Girls works but by far and wide, I have had the most compliments and requests for one to be made just for them is the Chelsea. This backpack/sling is wonderful for going to the kids sporting events or just walking around on vacation. It holds all my stuff and the rest of the fam's too. It even held my Pug Pup once. :)

  34. Thanks to Lazy Girl Designs for introducing me to these beautiful buttons...I can see were I could use them on your bags (wish I'd had some for the bags I have already made). I just want handfuls of these buttons....just so many to decide on! Margo is my favorite bag...have made one and have four almost finished...love those Maggies too. The directions are great and the patterns are so versatile. Keep up the good work...and thanks for posting all the photos.

  41. I'd love to try all Joan's patterns, but I keep going back to the Newport Tote for travel and the Towne Purse for everyday, with matching Wonder Wallets. They make wonderful gifts. What fun to match fabrics and colors to each lady. My fiends know their special bag is OOAK.

My 4 children learned to count, using buttons. One son is autistic. He used to amaze us with his hand/eye coordination by making tall stacks of buttons.

  68. This is a tough question. I guess I would have to say that although I have not made any of the Lazy Girl Design projects yet, I would have to select the "Sassy Bag" as my favorite. Since I am still new at sewing, I think I could do this one. It's not too big or complicated.... I think. And, half the fun would be picking out the fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  69. My favorite bag is Margo, because of the awesome 'dip down' zipper installation! I've made several samples and taught a Margo class last fall. Everyone loved the design and especially the security of the bag!

  72. I love the concept behind the Chelsea bag, that's my main bag and it gets compliments all the time, but when I made my mom a Margo, I sort of wished I could keep it because everything seemed so easy to access. And the zipper instructions in Perfect Pouches are very valuable (so are the pouches, I used one in place of the regular pocket on my Chelsea so that I had a front zippered, padded pocket and also a drop in pocket behind it. What can I say, there are really good patterns!

  126. My favorite LGD bag is the Miranda Day Bag. Have many of the LGD purse patterns and have made several of them up, but, always go back to my Miranda Day bag pattern and the Mini Miranda bag.

I'm always looking for fancy buttons when making different things and will have to check our yours and possibly add some of them to my button box for future use.

  131. I have many many Lazy Girl patterns and have made the Sassy Bag but mostly I spend my time making pincushions, which are my passion. So I would LOVE to win one of your new pincushion kits. They are adorable! I have bought your buttons since ever since you were known as "Just My Imagination" but I hoard your buttons and only use them on very special projects. I'm so glad I found this site!

  162. Margo!! With the recessed zipper.. Perfect!

As for PINCUSHIONS... My sisters and I are cleaning out our Mom's house and can you believe there is discussion over who gets Mom's favourite pin cushion? We all have memories of the 'dress judy' pin cushion she always had beside her at all times. Mom was an amazingly creative lady!! With a new pincushion kit, perhaps I could share more easily!

  163. I love the wonder wallet and most especially the Towne Purse. The purse is special to me as that was my mother's middle name and I always thought it an interesting choice for a name and to have made and own a purse with her name attached is a memory to cherish! So I have to say the Towne Purse will go down in history as being my favorite just for the name and the organization within!

  172. I bought my daughter a sewing machine for Christmas a couple of years ago and the LG patterns were perfect projects to make together to teach her the basics of sewing. We made the Mini Miranda and Claire which we both still carry. We made the Sassy Bag but didn't carry it as often until we both got e readers - they're the perfect size for an e-reader. I carry my summer tote nearly every work day as it's the perfect size for any work stuff up to and including a regular size notebook. I still want to make the duffle.

I love those pins and pincushions!

  177. My fabourite Lazy Girl bag is the Maggie. Why you ask? Well for one it's a really cute and useful little purse/bag and my youngest daughter is named ... Maggie! So naturally I've made several of these bags in the two different sizes and she's given them to her friends. Each has been embellished with the receiver's first name initial and a small clasp on the back. My Maggie has used her Maggie purse to hang from a hook on her wall where she places her house/locker keys each day so they don't get lost. The other girls have used them for their mobile phone, and one even uses hers to keep all her special girly notes from all her friends!
